Pitch Perfect

During my plane ride to Singapore, I had 3-hour free time and thought of watching Pitch Perfect since I heard a lot of good feedback about this movie.

I find it very entertaining, fun, and light movie that taught great things about change, teamwork and leadership.

Change for the best

The movie revolves around the female singing group called “Bellas” who regularly joins music competitions. They are known for using the same music material, same costume, and same theme, among others. Unfortunately, winning has always been far from them. Then, when Beca leads the group, she changes the traditional arrangement to all new mash-ups that turns into a perfect harmony.

I believe this goes the same way in everything that we do. There are times, we are thinking the same way, using the same strategy, and doing the same thing. But if we will just think beyond the ‘usual’ and what’s ‘comfortable’ for us, we will not get the same result. Mashing things up might bring us to a better music with the best harmony.

Lead to make a difference

When Beca steps in as Bellas’ leader, she engages every member of the group during the planning,  listens to their suggestions, aligns each of them according to their strengths, and motivates them when they are losing hope. This is entirely opposite compared to Audrey’s way of leading them where she just cascades to the team whatever her ideas are. The former is far more effective than the latter. Because of Bellas’ leadership, the team becomes more encouraged to achieve their goal of winning the competition.

I find the scenario applicable to real life – leading a family, an organization, a team. You are leading for the people not for yourself. Engaging each member, listening on their ideas, aligning them to where they can best contribute, and motivating them whatever happens will make a big difference that will lead to beautiful music.

Teamwork never fails

Can you imagine Bellas not working together during their practice until the day of the competition? They will definitely lose without even trying. I think this is one of the key ingredients in their recipe in creating a sumptuous music. Each has her own specialization in singing that contributes to the whole perfect piece.

This is absolutely goes the same way with every team we belong to – our family, our organization, our team, our cliques, etc. Each of us has unique talents to contribute for success.

I would love watching this movie over and over again.
